Essentials 3

Do your musical tastebuds a favour and feast on these:

Download: Forget Me Nots – Patrice Rushen (1982) (Right Click, Open in new window)(Alt Link)
* This 80s hit song has been sampled by a plethora of artists including as the main sample for Will Smith’s “Men In Black”, and the final section of “Fastlove” by George Michael. The most notable part of this track is its bass line, which is recognised as one the best studio bass sounds ever recorded.

Download: Treaty (Radio Mix) – Yothu Yindi (1991) (Right Click, Open in new window)(Alt Link)
*”Treaty” is an Indigenous Australian protest song written in collaboration with Yothu Yindi (featuring then-keyboardist Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu), Paul Kelly and Midnight Oil against former Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke’s failure to honour a promise made in 1988 to form a treaty with Indigenous Australian land owners. Thanks to a little remix treatment by Filthy Lucre, this song hit number 1 on the Australian pop charts and burned up dance floors nation-wide.

Download: A Girl Like You – Edwyn Collins (1994) (Right Click, Open in new window)(Alt Link)
*Former Orange Juice front man Edwyn Collins had a massive international hit with this song in 1994; With its hectically 60’s sound, sampled minimalist drum beat and various distorted guitar solos, how could this song be anything but a hit? It also features Sex Pistols drummer Paul Cook on the vibraphone.

Download: Birthday – The Sugarcubes (1987) (Right Click, Open in new window)(Alt Link)
*The Sugarcubes was Björk’s original band in Iceland before she went solo. It features a lyric-less hook line of Björk’s signature growling/yelping scream that is super-catchy. The subject matter is slightly disturbing though, but it’s a very cool song, so I won’t spoil it.

Download: Can’t Take My Eyes Off You – Frankie Valli (1967) (Right Click, Open in new window)(Alt Link)
*I’ll never forget when this song slowly swelled in as I was walking out after a Prodigy concert in January this year. The entire 6,000+ crowd stopped in their tracks and slowly realised it was playing, then sung along, making conga lines, and swing dancing with loved ones in pools of beer and sweat. It was incredible, and a perfect way to top off what was an amazing live experience. You may also remember this song from the movie 10 Things I Hate About You, sung by the late Heath Ledger.

Cheers, thanks a lot,

Viv.
