Levi’s OnesToWatch 5 Night Revue - Night 3

It was solo prodigies galore at night 3 with Marina & The Diamonds + Wolf Gang, Clock Opera, and a special performance by Dragonette.

First up (due to a 'scheduling snafu') was Dragonette, who you might remember I'm not a huge fan of. Suffice to say that I was proved wrong in some respects after seeing them live, especially due to Dragonette's bass, keyboard and laptop player slash backing vocalist Dan Kurtz, who seemed to carry the entire group. No chit chat from lead singer Martina, and her slight arrogance shone through her ridiculous dance movements. Still, an amazing performance from a deceptively amazing band.

Download: Pick Up The Phone - Dragonette (Right Click, Open in new window)(Alt Link)

Next was Clock Opera, who is the brainchild of producer/frontman Guy Connelly, who provided us with some much needed ethereal soundscapes to ponder. With a string of remixes already under his belt, and seriously tight live show, Clock Opera is spreading through the blogosphere and emerging into the wider music world with his atmospheric and soaring productions. Definitely "one to watch".

Download: Once And For All - Clock Opera (Right Click, Open in new window)(Alt Link)

Next was Wolf Gang, a slightly more accessible group from London, masterminded by Max McElligot, who takes a pop perspective on experimental rock music. Fun at times, and deep at times, but a perfect mix of both. With a strong backing band, once quoted as sounding like MGMT fronted by Bryan Ferry, and extremely original melodies and song structures, he is sure to take his project to the next level very soon.

Download: The King And All Of His Men - Wolf Gang (Right Click, Open in new window)(Alt Link)

And last was the very currently hyped Marina Diamond, featuring her backing band named The Diamonds. A brash and in-your-face British songwriter who is quite literally exploding onto the global music scene. Playing a dynamic set of beautiful slow piano ballads, and hard-hitting pop anthems, Marina managed to live up to and surpass her own hype and excited to capacity crowd to their tip toes.

Levi’s OnesToWatch 5 Night Revue - Night 2

Tonight we heard from the latest up-and-coming indie rock bands with Crystal Fights + Wild Palms & Violens.

Up first, all the way from New York City, was Violens - A new wave / art rock band with tinges of shoegaze that, despite their somewhat absent crowd interaction, managed to excite the full capacity room with their atmospheric rock sounds. Catch them at a venue or festival near you very soon as they are currently exploding on the global music scene.

Download: Lightning Lightning - Violens (Right Click, Open in new window)(Alt Link)

Up next was London's very own Wild Palms. There's definitely potential with this group, and their sonic and rhythmic ideas particularly were extremely original and engaging (sometimes 3 people were playing different rhythms at the same time, including the lead singer on electronic drums!). A bright future ahead for this seemingly young group, especially for their incredibly unique drummer who sometimes seemed to completely dominate the rooms attention.

Download: ........Over......Time....... - Wild Palms (Right Click, Open in new window)(Alt Link)

And last, it was the shirtless techno-punk-crunk antics of Crystal Fighters. This trio of hairy rockers were definitely where the party was at, turning the night from an introspective analysis of the universe and one's relationship with such, to a down-town house party. Already signed to the infamous Kitsuné label, and pumping out remixes like a gypsy giving birth, they too are exploding on the international music scene.

Cheers, thanks a lot,

Viv.

Two Door Cinema Club Can Talk

Indie kids Two Door Cinema Club have been creating quite a stir as of late and are well, huge. The debut LP, out on Kitsuné February next year is highly anticipated and with singles like 'I Can Talk', there is no wonder why.

Get your hands on anything you can find from the UK / Irish 3 piece.

'I Can Talk' is out on the 23rd of November on Kitsune.

Today I've got a couple of remixes for you as well as another original.

Levi’s OnesToWatch 5 Night Revue - Night 1

Levi’s OnesToWatch 5 Night Revue is a sponsored music event happening over 5 nights this week here in London, showcasing the best up and coming artists and bands from all corners of the genre world to small crowds before they shoot to superstardom.

Past acts to play the 150 capacity event include: Editors, The Kooks, The Mystery Jets, The Fratellis, Ida Maria, Foals, Late Of The Pier, Friendly Fires, We Are Scientists, White Lies, Black Lips, The Temper Trap, Hockey, Passion Pit, and Dananananaykroyd.

It was scruffy facial hair, flanel shirts, and seemless vocal harmonies abroad with Andrew Davie + Goldheart Assembly & Young Rebel Set.

Young Rebel Set (above 2) opened the night with their harder edged indie folk rock. Performing like seriously experienced experts, they managed to excite the eager crowd with their erratic movements and catchy tunes. They were a tuneful sonic barrage of guitars and beats, with a tinge of earthly feelings.

Download: Fall Hard - Young Rebel Set (Right Click, Open in new window)(Alt Link)

Next was mine and Harry's favourite of the night, Goldheart Assembly, who sound like a cross between The Beatles and The Beach Boys, using intruments like glockenspiels, slide guitars, and hammond organs, these guys really showed off their incredible vocal ability, in some instances singing 5-part harmonies completely acapella. Their lead guitarist is also something else, with a stage presence and look (not to mention talent!) that seemed completely effortless and natural.

Download: Wolves And Thieves - Goldheart Assembly (Right Click, Open in new window)(Alt Link)

And lastly the sombre yet beautiful songs of Andrew Davie. A truly mesmerising set that immobilised the whole room in silence as he dynamically tugged at our emotions and let us know how he felt. A magical experience for all involved, which left the room in an eerie silent disbelief from the first chord. A extremely mature songwriter with amazingly poignant lyrics.

Viv.

New Róisín Murphy

Upon first hearing "Orally Fixated", most people wouldn't even get close to guessing what it's really about. Róisín Murphy has always been a champion of song writing in my eyes. She has an unmatched ability to express simple concepts in complex ways, and also a knack for bold studio production.

The song, in fact, is about Murphy having to give up smoking when she got pregnant, and how she was orally fixated on cigarettes throughout the pregnancy. Now, as her new baby is due for birth at any moment, "Orally Fixated", and a small barage of other future singles, are in the basket to tide her fans over until the baby is born, settled, and cared for, then it's album number 3.

Musically, I'd say that "Orally Fixated" sits between Murphy's debut effort Ruby Blue, and the much more popular Overpowered. It's experimental in nature, but still retains a dance/pop flair to please her newer fans. Hopefully it's a pretext to the musical direction of her next album, which is due for release sometime next year.

For now, enjoy this piece of in-your-face electro-pop, but try not to think about it's simple subject matter.

Maybe she can quit for good?

O'Spada

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

If you have never heard the funky disco grooves of O'Spada then, simply, you are missing out. The five piece from Stockholm are a clash between soul, funky, hip hop and rock creating their own uniqueness that sounds somewhat familiar yet surprisingly fresh.

They intentionally leaked their track "Time" way back in March with rave reviews from Bloggers, punters, magazines and radio hosts alike.

Download: Time - O'Spada (Right Click, Open in new window)(Alt Link)

Now they are premiering their next track 'Ten Strikes".

Dare I say, it's even better.

It would be a great shame if these guys never take off, but with the quality and charm of their music, that's hardly a worry. Get yourselves into these guys, they will make you smile, they'll make you dance and they'll make you groove your way back in time.

Glass Candy - Deep Gems (2008)

U.S.A.
Italo Disco / Electronica / Ghetto House
Deep Gems is a half compilation/half b-side album by italo-disco revivalists, Glass Candy, released as a follow up to 2007's B/E/A/T/B/O/X. It features a collection of previously unfinished demos, new tracks, and alternate versions of previous tracks.
The big difference I'd note between B/E/A/T/B/O/X and Deep Gems is that Deep Gems has more of a "booty bass"/Chicago/Ghetto House feel than the former, even including a sample of "Mind Playin' Tricks On Me" by Geto Boys on their version of "Iko Iko" titled "Get Boys".
There's also a remix of their cover of Belle Epoque's "Miss Broadway" from the After Dark compilation, and alternate versions of "Digital Versicolor", "Beatific", and Deep Gems' own "Animal Imagination", which is given a stripped-down treatment in "Soft Boundaries". And all this WITHOUT computers!
It's a strong release with evidence of a slight change in direction for the band. And although I hate compilation albums, I really couldn't tell the difference.
I hope they know where they are going from here.
"If you're looking for the most authentic and effective vintage-not-vinatge disco around you'd do very well with this."

Shwayze - Let It Beat (2009)

U.S.A.
Electronic / Rock/ Alternative Hip Hop

Yes, he's back ALREADY, and he's changed. Where Shwayze's debut was more about sunshine, backyard parties, and life in Malibu, Let It Beat focuses mostly on club-friendly electronic, rock, and hip hop music. Good move I say, and each track has it's individual shtick which creates a dynamic and different experience for the listener.

It will please most existing Shwayze fans, and earn him legions and legions more. Much kudos to Cisco Adler too for his brilliant production and songwriting on this record, very thoughtful and stylised.

Let's just hope Madonna doesn't sue him for "Dirty Little Girl".[1]

"I just want to try everything I can with music and just expand".
- Shwayze, 2009.

[1](It's the exact chord progression from "Holiday" by Madonna).

Havin' Big Fun

Sydney electronic wizards Bag Raiders released today an "EP" titled 'Big Fun'. I'm not sure why it's called 'Big Fun' because it's only one new original and three new remixes of old Bag Raiders songs, none of which make musical or lyrical reference to the Inner City original.

Even though duo have collaborated with Donnis on the lead track and the EP has been released on A-trak's Fools Gold label, it ain't got shit on Shooting Stars.

Good effort though, bit funky, bit catchy, bit different, but not amazing.

Julian Casablancas - Phrazes For The Young (2009)

U.S.A.
Indie / Garage / New Wave

The extended hiatus of The Strokes has again produced another spin-off act in the form of lead singer Julian Casablancas finally going it solo. For anyone who's only heard the lead single "11th Dimension", your expectation of the album might be a little bit skewed. That said, the album begins more Strokes-ish and descents down a much more experimental path towards the end, making it like a "journey".

Phrazes For The Young is worth a listen, but I think it primarily stands as an excuse to keep Julian busy for a while before The Strokes get their shit together.

It's not going to change your life, or make it to the top of your Most Played list on iTunes, but if you're a Strokes fan, it might also give you something to keep yourself busy till they get their shit together.

No more Strokes spin-offs please, they all pretty much sound the same anyway!

"It may not have the sugar rush immediacy of the Strokes, and at times it's downright indulgent, but Phrazes for the Young shows that Casablancas has more than enough ideas for several albums on his own and with his band".
- Heather Phares, Allmusic.com.

Bullion - Pet Sounds: In The Key of Dee (2008)

United Kingdom
Hip Hop / Baroque Pop / Funk

There's no doubt that The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds is one of the most important musical recordings of our time. It has influenced popular music for decades, and remained critically acclaimed as one of, if not the, best albums ever made. What a special and risky idea it is to want to create a remixed Pet Sounds album, no? Essentially, it's somewhat disrespectful to do such a thing, right? In most cases yes, but in the case of Pet Sounds: In The Key Of Dee, no way!

English producer Bullion has paid tribute to the late J Dilla and the incredible Brian Wilson simultaneously by remixing Pet Sounds by using the beats and production style of J Dilla.

It is truly gobsmackingly amazing! (Especially for fans of alternative hip hop who also happen to like Pet Sounds), and I'm so impressed by it that I am posting the entire 25 minute mini-album/mixtape for download.

It is absolute FIRE!!

VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

Tegan & Sara - Sainthood (2009)

Canada
Indie / Pop / Alternative
Those lovable Canadian lesbian twins are back, with balls. Their latest effort, Sainthood, possibly more brash, in your face, and staunch than So Jealous, and definately a departure from the soft and more spacious sound of their last effort, The Con. This said, Tegan & Sara's incredibly honest and thought provoking songwriting, aswell as their individual style reamins.
It's a slightly more aggressive and direct album, with simple structures and very straight forward messages. A lot less figurative and oblique, and bit more literal. It explores the various musical domains of typical indie rock, with that slightly awkward Canadian edge.
Sara's songs are characteristically more complex, and Tegan's are more poppy, which gives the album an even balance of deep artistry, and accessibility for all to enjoy.
This 6th effort definitely signifies a continually prosperous career ahead for these indie superstars.
"Pretty much the only music I was listening to between The Con and this record was like The Dream record and the T.I. record. I was pretty much just listening to hip hop and R&B".

Patrice Rushen - Straight From The Heart (1982)

U.S.A.
Soul / R n' B / Booty-Funk

We here at Sex 4 Ears have a bit of a love affair with Patrice Rushen, the 80's songstress responsible for "Forget Me Nots", which was the basis of Will Smith's hit theme track to the film Men In Black, and also sampled by George Michael in his sexual smash "Fastlove", and MC Solaar in "Les Temps Changent".

The song is collectively renowned for it's funky production aesthetics and Freddie Washington's amazing bass playing, as well as it's simple yet effective rhythmic chords. Straight From The Heart is everything that makes "Forget Me Nots" amazing, 9 times. ie. Freddie Washington plays the bass, Rushen lightly taps her electric piano, the hand claps are as prevalent as ever, and the funky guitar riffs pick and pluck throughout. There's even an instrumental track written by Rushen herself!

It's feel-good pop-soul designed to make you move - infectiously rhythmic and melodically sweet, with just enough funk to start your party.

I dare you to not tap your feet!

"The sound of Straight To The Heart influenced soul for a considerable period afterwards. Listening today, it can be seen as something of a template for many of the later divas".

Dirty Monkeez

Christoph & Geri are the Hungarian production duo Dirty Monkeez. I got sent their latest fidget rework of the Stevie Wonder classic 'Sir Duke' a couple of days ago. Not sure if I'm diggin' the messing with Stevie Wonder, but the song made me want to delve into my music collection and dig up some of their previous works.

Most of their work has the screeching grinding electronic sound which I'm fond of. Their remixes of Don Rimini's 'Hools' and Daniel Merriweather's 'Change' are especially great.

Ghost Klub

Most people secretly love their pop. Others, fall over for their rock n roll. Some love to take a journey listening to classical music. Others love it when the floor, roof and walls shake from the sounds of a warbling bassline.

The last one, although not so 'musically credible', as some would put it, still makes me dance. I love bass. I love dance music. I love to have fun going insane. Does that make sense?

Ghost Klub are one of the artists I look to, to make me dance. Focusing on electro and dubstep they've been making waves in the scene since their remixes for The Toxic Avenger this summer.

They are launching their Nitepressures EP in late November and I've been sent some tasty treats to share.
